The Ladders album art!

I've always been a fan of good album art on jewel cases, and always thought it really does help me determine wheter or not I should invest in the music. So when it became time to design my band's album art for our upcoming EP, I tried to keep it as simple and subjective as possible. There is a little backstory to the fish, but I thought about how this would catch eyes in relation to all the other CDs around it (if on a store shelf).

Plein-air studies

So I've been taking the plein air painting course over at CSUF to gain a more sophisticated sense of color and I think it's paying off...although I've still got a long way to go. I never realized how much stuff there is to take in! It's really tough, but it's totally fun to paint outdoors.

I've been working on some vis. dev stuff for some ideas (more on that later) but here's a character sketch that i thought had some charm.

More caricature fun!

Ok, I said I'd post other stuff...but these are taking up the majority of my sketchbook, so why not! :) Plus, I've been jamming with this new Copic brush marker that makes the drawings look so much better.

The Ladders frontman

Here is the lead singer of my band Johnny Lim (aka Johnny The Lim). That red affect was made by just applying a stroke to the layer, i thought it gave it a cool touch. To see photos of Johnny, checkout www.myspace.com/theladdersmusic

Another caricature...

I'm diggin the look of these! I guess i should force myself to break away from styles i get locked into. I have actually been pumping these out for people from advertisments on my myspace page, www.myspace.com/bouncingkramer I charge a way better price than you get at any amusement park, so hopefully I'll generate some gas money or cash for pencils and beer.

Self-caricature

Here's my most recent self interpretation of yours truly. I was playing around with that loose coloring technique i see a lot. I actually like it! I think it gives the drawing a lot of personality and style (for lack of a better term). I also used Erich Haeger's tutorial on varying the line weight in illustrator for the inking. This was good times, eventhough the likeness is not 100%

This is gonna be the cover to my sketchbook (in progress) for comic-con this year, appropriately titled "Draw!" i still gotta work out a BG and font/color scheme.

although, that is the revised drawing...i originally had him more straight on about to "draw" but i'm not completely convinced which one i like more. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
